As the global energy transition accelerates, transformers—core equipment in power systems—are experiencing rapid demand growth in overseas markets and entering a critical phase of technological upgrading. In this feature interview, we speak with Dongfang Electronics' transformer team to decode the company's end-to-end approach—spanning R&D, production, quality control, and market strategy—and explore how it delivers reliable, green, and intelligent system solutions tailored to diverse power scenarios worldwide.

Q1: How does Dongfang Electronics ensure its transformer R&D is both compliant and adaptable to complex global market demands?
Yuan Kedao, Chief Engineer, Dongfang Electronics Transformers:
Our R&D strategy consistently follows a dual-track approach: “Global Standards + Regional Customization.”
Southeast Asia: To cope with high heat and humidity, we have developed specialized insulation systems and anti-corrosion treatments. We’ve also enhanced lightning protection in response to frequent thunderstorms.
Europe: Our products strictly comply with the EU Ecodesign Directive (EU 548/2014) and energy efficiency regulations such as TIER 1 and TIER 2.
Africa: We focus on improving voltage fluctuation tolerance, dust resistance, and high-temperature adaptability in regions with weaker grid infrastructure.
This localization goes far beyond technical parameters—it drives systematic innovation across materials, structures, and application-specific design.
Q2: What technological innovations has Dongfang Electronics developed in response to new power system requirements such as renewable integration and smart grids?
Yuan Kedao:
Given the intermittency and volatility of renewable energy generation, grid adaptability is critical. To address this, we have developed wide-range on-load tap-changing transformers with broader voltage regulation capabilities. We are also exploring the integration of power electronics with conventional transformers—developing flexible voltage regulation transformers to better accommodate distributed energy resources.
Additionally, in pursuit of lower LCOE (levelized cost of energy) for renewable power generation, we are rolling out a new generation of large-capacity, high-voltage amorphous alloy stereo-wound core transformers. Their ultra-high efficiency will directly translate into higher returns over the entire lifecycle of renewable power plants.
Q3: How do you operationalize the “zero defect” philosophy in manufacturing to ensure high product quality for overseas customers?
Zhang Tiezhu, Deputy General Manager of Production, Dongfang Electronics Transformers:
Our “zero defect” approach is embedded across the entire production chain, forming a closed-loop quality control system with full traceability.
—At the design stage, we apply FMEA and DOE to identify and eliminate potential failure modes.
—During production, we enforce a strict “three-no” mechanism: no defective inputs, no defective manufacturing, no defective outputs.
—Automatic winding machines are equipped with real-time parameter verification modules; any deviation beyond tolerance triggers an immediate shutdown.
—Critical welding processes combine robotic automation with manual visual re-inspection.
We also maintain a “defect traceability log”—each minor flaw is recorded with its root cause, responsible post, and corrective measures. Over the past three years, our production defect rate has dropped from 0.3% to 0.08%.
Q4: How does lean manufacturing support Dongfang Electronics’ core competitiveness?
Zhang Tiezhu:
Lean manufacturing is central to our competitive edge. By applying value stream mapping, we systematically eliminate waste across the production flow:
Logistics: Unified packaging standards and line-side warehousing enable JIT delivery.
Workstations: Tools and materials are arranged for ergonomic efficiency.
Processes: Standardized workflows and automated error-proofing mechanisms stabilize quality.
Equipment: TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) ensures equipment availability stays at 99.9%.
Meanwhile, our MES is integrated with the Andon system to provide real-time visibility into production progress, quality traceability, and instant anomaly response. This closed-loop system—planning, execution, control, feedback—converts every unit of capacity into value-added output for our customers.
Q5: Are international certifications and standards a “door opener” or a “shield”? How critical are they for transformer companies going global?
Sun Wenpeng, Quality Manager, Dongfang Electronics Transformers:
They are both the entry ticket and the foundation of trust. For power equipment, safety is the top priority. Standards published by IEC and IEEE are globally recognized technical benchmarks.
Our approach is not just to obtain certificates—but to internalize the principles of these standards into every phase of development and production, making them intrinsic to product quality.
Q6: Which overseas markets are currently covered by Dongfang Electronics' transformer business?
Gao Peng, Deputy General Manager, Dongfang Electronics Transformers:
Our overseas strategy is fully aligned with the group’s overall globalization roadmap: “Deepen presence in core markets; expand globally with breakthroughs.”
We have prioritized Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Europe as key regions. We’ve already made substantial progress in Europe and Southeast Asia. Through localized teams, local partners, and localized manufacturing capabilities, we are transitioning from “product export” to “capability integration.”
Q7: How does Dongfang Electronics build long-term resilience amid the challenges of going global? What is your long-term strategic positioning?
Liu Changqiang, General Manager, Dongfang Electronics Transformers:
To navigate the complexities of cross-border operations, we have built a dedicated compliance team to ensure full alignment with local laws, regulations, and business practices. Meanwhile, we have forged deep partnerships with strong local players to enable capability sharing and risk co-management.
Looking forward, we are firmly committed to executing our global strategy, with the ambition to be recognized as a global leader in transformer technology solutions, a creator of full-lifecycle customer value, and a builder of localized industrial ecosystems.
We aim to grow into a reliable partner—driven by innovation, centered on customer value, and grounded in long-term mutual success. We are committed to contributing tangible “Eastern strength” to the global transition toward clean, secure, and intelligent energy systems.
