Recently, the Taolian Intelligent Microgrid Cluster—the first large-scale group control project for an integrated hydro-PV-energy storage intelligent microgrid participated in by Dongfang Electronics under China Southern Power Grid—has been fully put into operation in the Conghua Forest Bathing Area New Rural Demonstration Zone. This project innovatively establishes a new “two-way empowerment” model for grid development and rural prosperity, achieving a qualitative leap from “ensuring stable power supply” to “providing high-quality smart energy services,” injecting new momentum for green development into Taolian Village and surrounding communities.

Demonstration Leadership: Building China Southern Power Grid’s First Large Microgrid Cluster to Support Rural Revitalization

As another major breakthrough following the launch of Guangdong’s first whole-village flexible grid-forming intelligent microgrid demonstration project in 2025, the Taolian Intelligent Microgrid Cluster represents a systematic leap in technical capabilities. The project encompasses 13 sub-microgrids of four different types, making it the first large-scale microgrid cluster under China Southern Power Grid.

Against the backdrop of the national push to construct a new power system and deepen the integration of energy transition with rural revitalization, this project provides a replicable, highly reliable microgrid cluster solution for regions rich in clean energy resources. It serves as a key practical example for implementing both strategies and sets an industry benchmark for rural energy upgrades.

Technical Support: Dongfang Electronics Provides Multi-Dimensional Support to Build a New Smart Energy Ecosystem

Focusing on the needs of rural grid upgrades and multi-energy collaborative control, Dongfang Electronics delivered critical technologies and equipment, including distributed resource grid-connection control terminals, low-voltage flexible direct current devices, and system-side microgrid cluster panoramic monitoring. This successfully created a smart energy system integrating photovoltaics, energy storage, small hydropower, and low-voltage flexible direct current.

The system boasts strong adaptive capabilities, allowing automatic grid-connected or islanded operation under complex fault conditions. Even in emergencies such as substation bus voltage loss or faults in different sections of 10kV feeder lines, it can automatically form networks to restore power supply to affected areas, ensuring uninterrupted electricity provision.

Notably, the low-voltage flexible direct current interconnection technology adopted in the project enables real-time interconnection between stations, dynamic sharing of surplus capacity, rapid fault transfer, disaster recovery backup, and other multi-level functions. By integrating idle resources from different stations based on load characteristics, resource utilization efficiency is increased by 100%. Additionally, dynamic capacity expansion is achieved through power mutual support between stations, with two stations serving as backups for each other. This significantly enhances power supply reliability during faults and scheduled maintenance, reshaping the structure of end-user grids under the new power system.

Looking ahead, Dongfang Electronics will further deepen its expertise in core areas such as microgrid cluster control, multi-energy collaborative optimization, and digital energy integration. The company will continue to strengthen its capabilities in technological R&D and engineering applications, injecting robust momentum into the construction of smart energy systems and the new power system, and supporting rural revitalization and energy transition as they advance toward higher-quality development.
